A while back, there were a number of posts about kite flying being banned on the beaches of Hawaii. Is this still the case? Is there any point in my brining sport kites with me? If so, what are some good places to fly on Maui? Also, I plan to bring my Quadrafoil C2 and Jojo6.5 in case I have an opportunity to try kite surfing.

Yeah, I recall that thread. Someone posted that you couldn't fly kites at any state beaches in Hawaii or something scary sounding like that. I've since read posts by kiters that have been in (or returned from) Hawaii and never mentioned anytihing about kiting being banned there. Last time I was in Hawaii I wasn't into kiting yet but next time I go you can bet I'll be taking some kites and planning on doing some beach flying too. Most curious to know if there are 'no kiting' beaches over there.

Just returned from Maui...tried to fly at Makena...got busted by the kite police. 'No fly kite on state beach!' said he. He suggested county beaches in Kehei...too small and way too crowded with people and trees.

Flew on the north shore where I was staying but it made all the neighborhood doggies bark. Very windy on the north shore...best for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Not much sand for kiteflying/doggie avoiding.

Dave- I say go for it!! I've been going there for years and take several kites every time. The north shore is a bit windy, but I like speed wings and huge dual liners (10- 13ft) to pull my butt all over the place. There is a big place on/at the end of the jetty at the harbor just north of the airport. Lots of room and stiff steady breezes/winds starting in the late morning. There's also a lot of beach at the north end of Maalea Bay near the Bird Refuge/King's fish pond. Not many people there at all when I'm there in Novemb/December each year. There is also a huge grass area in south Kehei just west of the beach hiway at Kamamole IV just north of the boat dock. Several kiters meet there mid to late Sunday mornings. Bunch of really neat guys!! If you're gonna be there (Maui) from just after Thanksgiving for a couple weeks, gimme an email and we can meet and I'll be only too happy to show you around!!!

May the wind always BE at your back!! Bill Phoenix
